Background:

First a little background about Northampton. Whilst Northampton can trace its history as far back as 4000 BC, far more recently Northampton has been known as the centre of the UK Shoe manufacturing industry. Sadly only small parts of the industry have survived as those of you who have seen the film Kinky Boots will know and now most of the shoes, once produced in Northampton are now made overseas.

oday Northampton’s main industry is the service industry with major organisations such as Barclaycard, Nationwide Building Society, Euro Building & Maintenance, Panasonic, Travis Perkins, Coca Cola Schweppes Beverages Ltd, National Grid and Carlsberg being amongst the major employers.

As the third largest town in England, without city status and with a position it held in the 12th Century, and a growing population, Northampton boasts a host of small businesses providing a wealth of jobs for its inhabitants, which now include a very welcome Polish contingent. As an indication of growth, Northampton’s population has grown by over a third since 19881, when it reached 150,000 to today’s figure of over 200,000. For football fans Northampton’s moment of glory came in 1965 when Northampton Town Football Club won promotion to Division 1 for first and only time in their history. In Northampton’s first home game they drew 1-1 with Arsenal. In the second home game they drew 1-1 with Manchester United, watched by crowd of over 21,000 the largest league crowd ever at the old County Ground at the time. How times have changed. And finally a few brief incidents from Northampton’s historic past.

In 1460 The Battle of Northampton, part of The War of the Roses was fought in Hardingstone fields between the river and Delapre Abbey – where the Yorkists defeated the Lancastrians and captured Henry VI. This possible led to the Town reportedly being in "great desolation and ruin", around 1460 with a population of just 3,000 by 1500. In 1516 fire destroyed much of the town, but just 8 years later shoemaking was established as town’s major craft and about 14% of population were shoemakers.
The rest, as they say, is history!
